Information - Attractions

Gloucestershire

In an enviable position west of London, between Bath, Oxford and Stratford-on-Avon, Gloucestershire has style, elegance, charm...and cheese rolling. The funkiest farmers' markets, festivals, great country pubs and, once a year, a mad scramble down the steepest slope to catch a cheese or two.

Cheltenham

The County is best known for the Cotswolds, but the area includes The Royal Forest of Dean, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and Gloucester.

In recent years the Cotswolds area has reinvented itself. Forget the chintz, the Cotswolds is now a hotspot for spas, award-winning designer farm shops and gorgeous gardens. Liz Hurley, Kate Moss, Hugh Grant and Kate Winslet have recently moved to the area and it's easy to see why. The Cotswolds offer space and escape in a beautiful environment and that's exactly what's on offer to visitors too. Cotswold attractions include the renowned National Trust gardens at Hidcote, Sudeley Castle gardens, and the National Arboretum at Westonbirt.

Forest

Nearby, the Royal Forest of Dean is the last great English broadleaf forest, formerly a hunting ground for the kings of England. Nowadays it's emerging as a great destination for adrenaline sports and activity breaks, all against the backdrop of acres of woodland and nature reserves. It's one of the most colourful corners of England - daffodils and bluebells in spring, and gold in Autumn. Clearwell Caves and the Dean Heritage Centres both provide a fascinating glimpse into the industrial heritage of this unique area, and the Sculpture Trail is a delight.

Gloucestershire

Regency Cheltenham complements the surrounding countryside, with its attractive buildings, and distinctive shops, restaurants and events. The Stroud Valleys has a very alternative feel. There are some superb artists and craftspeople based there, plus great food producers. Berkeley Castle is fabulous, and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge is nationally recognised for its conservation work. Tewkesbury, with its distinctive black and white architecture, has a river backdrop, with boat trips in summer, plus a beautiful Abbey at the heart of the town. Gloucester has a magnificent Cathedral, and a revitalised Docklands area.

Gloucestershire has acquired a great reputation for food, with local produce of the highest quality. You'll find award-winning cheeses, organic meats, wine and smoked fish. Seasonal delights include asparagus in early summer and apple juices and ciders in the Autumn. Try a cream tea in a Cotswold village, or a sophisticated dinner in a pub or restaurant.
