Tavistock, Okehampton and Dartmoor

Lydford Gorge

The towns of Tavistock and Okehampton offer a wide range of culture and activities, Okehampton has the ruins of a Castle, shops, cinema, golf course, restaurants and pubs, nearer by is Castle Drogo (NT) a 20th century castle. The Dartmoor railway runs for a couple of miles near to Meldon reservoir, the Devon Cycle trail (route 27) is almost all off road cycling near Meldon quarry going over the old viaduct to Lydford, visit www.devoncyclehire.co.uk for bike hire and more information. Lydford has two excellent pubs offering quality food and other castle and Lydford Gorge (NT) with the white lady waterfall. Nearby is Roadford Lake where you can participate in various water based activities, bird watching, fishing and walking. Tavistock

rich in history, the town developed around the abbey founded in 974 and grew with the 19th century copper boom. The town was voted the country's best Market Town in 2004, the indoor Pannier Market and varied speciality and local shops offer a great day out shopping. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and pubs and farmers markets every fortnight. Tavistock was the birthplace of the great 16th century mariner, Sir Frances Drake. Today you can walk along the 19th century canal or the Viaduct walk on the former rail way line which runs high above the town. Meadowlands has an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, bowls and nearby the Wharf presents cinema, music and drama www.tavistockwharf.com . Many of the buildings in the town and area were built by the Duke of Bedford.
Near Tavistock is the Garden house www.thegardenhouse.org.uk and Cotehele house and gardens (NT) www.nationaltrust.org.uk , ideal for garden lovers, a short distance is Morwellham quay www.morwellham-quay.co.uk, once the centre of a great copper mining boom, the little riverside port of Morwellham was lost and forgotten. Today you can visit this remarkable restored village which takes you back in time and the riverside tramway can take you deep into the George and Charlotte mine to discover the life of a Cornish miner.
Tavistock also lies on the Devon Coast to coast cycle route.

David and Catriona Fursdon took over the stewardship of the estate in 1979 and warmly invite visitors to tour certain parts of the house. The rooms you will see date from different periods in history – mediaeval, Jacobean, Georgian and Regency – and are in constant use by the present family.

Beaches

Saunton Sands - 3 miles of flat sand backed by massive sand dunes. Excellent surfing beach and ideal for all water sports. Manned with lifeguards. Wheelchair accessible.
Westwrd Ho! - and/pebbles - is easily accessible from the car park and is ideal for swimming and surfing. There are also pools in the rocks which have been adapted for swimming.
Croyde - sandy beach excellent for swimming, surfing, windsurfing etc. The beach is manned with lifeguards.
Woolacombe - 3 miles of golden sand with numerous awards. It is very clean and tidy, has good toilet facilities, first aid, life saving equipment and even a lost children service.
Putsborough - award winning sandy beach manned with lifeguards. Again ideal for surfing, swimming and water sports.
